who are the nuanced naturopaths?

The Nuanced Naturopaths Podcast is a friendly conversation between two friends, Karinda and Julie. We’re passionate about finding the nuance in natural health, wellness & healing.

As degree-qualified naturopaths, we like to ask the questions that need to be asked, especially when the healthcare world is rampant with dogma, crap advice, fad diets & confusing info.

We delight in questioning firmly held beliefs and finding the nuance in all subjects, health-related and beyond.

Sometimes it can get a little technical, but hopefully, we explain things in a way that is accessible to anyone interested in natural health, whether you’re a practitioner or someone simply who wants to learn more about and optimise your well-being. It’s a chat about poop, periods and everything in between.

So buckle up for a laugh, a cry, and prepare to leave with health myths-busted, practical advice on sustainable healing (…and your mind blown!)

The Nuanced Naturopaths are Karinda Maree and Julie Forrester, both Health Science degree-qualified Naturopaths, both studying at Endeavour College of Natural Health in Melbourne (though, at different times). As friends, they discovered a similar propensity to question…everything! They delight in finding the clarifications, exceptions to the rule, the variations from one human to another and explore the ‘why’ …essentially finding the nuance.

They find the holes in firm beliefs. They believe it’s important to always hold space for other viewpoints, as it is in questioning the known that knowledge can be expanded. This can mean that they have multiple ‘tabs open’ on a myriad of subjects at any one time - waiting for the discussion or further clarification, it’s an ongoing conversation and one that they’ve decided to share with you.

Karinda has always had a fascination for all things menstrual cycles, female health and how the body, mind and hormones interact. She teaches women to lean into the ebb and flow of their menstrual cycles, harnessing the power of each phase — menstrual, follicular, ovulation & luteal — making the most of the superpower of ovulation and allowing the nervous system to rest and recover during the luteal phase. Living aligned with nature, by learning and practising this ‘tuning in’ means women can be happier, healthier, and actually THRIVE in their bodies. Yes, harnessing the power of the menstrual cycle is a superpower, not a hindrance (oh, the patriarchy has a lot to answer for!), and until recently hasn’t been much acknowledged within mainstream women’s medicine.

Julie, a woman, mother, and grandmother, has a whole other past life before naturopathy! As a mature-aged student, she discovered a passion for learning (she launched out of a Health Science degree and straight into a Master of Advanced Naturopathic Medicine in Human Microbiome & Health/Integrative Gastroenterology). Needless to say one of Julie’s top skills is combing through the research, understanding the nitty gritty, and alchemising her findings into practical solutions for herself & her clients. She has always been fascinated with how things work, particularly the human body. Now, working with a long list of people struggling with chronic, complex health conditions, her patients are finding that there is always something that can be done to improve their health — no matter how intense their health may seem. She delights in using standard blood tests for naturopathic analysis for preventative health; looking beyond the standard reference ranges and applying a functional approach to pathology interpretation (read: no stone will be left unturned, and you’ll never hear “everything looks normal” from Julie if you don’t feel right!). All health starts in the gut, so manipulating the microbiome and harnessing the power of our little superhero microbial friends is key to improving digestive health (and whole health). You could even say… it’s the smallest things that make the biggest difference!

If you’re tapping play on one of their episodes, buckle up for discussions about poop, periods, real-life case studies, pharmaceuticals, supplements, the research and everything in between; delightfully packaged up in the natural conversation of two friends (who would be chatting endlessly about this stuff, whether there’s a mic there or not!)
